King Edwards VI Northfield School for Girls, holds a high value on the quality of arts and technology provision across the school including large and varied enrichment opportunities available to all.
The Arts and Technology Faculty comprises the subjects Art & Design, Computer Science, D&T (Graphics and Textiles), Food and Music. Lessons are taught by subject specialists as separate subjects.
All students study these subjects at KS3: three hours a fortnight for Art & Design, two hours a fortnight for Music and there are two hours a week where pupils rotate through Computer Science and the technology subjects
At Key Stage 4, students currently have the opportunity to opt for one or more of the following courses:
- Art, Graphics, Music, Computer Science, Food and D&T: Textiles are all available as full GCSE subjects in KS4.
In addition to the whole school trips, there are also trips organised to Art galleries and the Music department has had students perform at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. The faculty also collaborates with other departments every year for Diversity Day. In 2022, girls worked in groups to analyse and write poetry within the English department on the theme of diversity. In groups they then worked in Music and then Art to create a response to the topic of diversity. There were outstanding sessions provided by inspiring external speakers covering the different subjects.
The Faculty puts on a range of performances throughout the year, including a Christmas Concert and a Summer Arts Evening, providing valuable opportunities for our musicians, dancers, actors and artists to perform and display and celebrate the best of their achievements from the year. Last year the pupils performed the show ‘Sister Act’. This was then followed up with an opportunity to see the show on stage at the Birmingham Hippodrome.
